What happened to my carrot?

Hi all,

So it's finally come to harvest time for my first set of carrots but when I went to pull one of them it was bright yellow, had roots coming from all over and there was grey dust of some sort in the soil.

There was no indication it was ready to be picked but I thought as the others were ready (tops showing) I thought I may as well pull this one too.

Any thoughts?

Carrots were originally that sort of colour before (the Dutch, I think) bred the modern orange varieties we now grow, so it's likely a genetic reversion.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

I think you may have sown them in fertilised ground, you have a lot of green and lots of roots along the carrot.

It sounds like you have a children's book in the making....

I did wonder that, I haven't fed them in a while and the others are fine.
