Clematis Montana leaves turning bright yellow

I have a 1 yr old Clematis Montana which had been growing so vigorously and looking great until I fed it diluted Tomorite and give it some well rotted manure last week. That was the first time I've fed it Tomorite and now the purple leaves are turning an acidic yellow colour. have I overdone it?! Other than the yellowing it still looks healthy (not wilting) but I am worried it is slowly dying.  Should I leave it alone? Prune it back? Or do something else entirely?!!

Any help or advice hugely appreciated!

PS. Its roots are completely in the shade and leaves in the sun so it should be fine in that respect.

I think it's too late in the year to be feeding plants as any new growth won't have time to harden off before winter winds and frosts arrive.   Also, if it's been dry your way, a mulch of manure will have locked in dryness and thirsty clematis don't do well so try giving it a good long drink of 10litres of water, poured slowly.   Repeat every other day for a couple of weeks and see if that helps.

  • Thanks so much Obelixx. It has actually been pretty wet here in England throughout June and July (worst summer I can remember!) though it has been warm this last week. I'll see if I can find a way of seeing how dry it is further down and then give it a long water as you suggest.  Thanks very much again :)

April and May were exceedingly dry in some areas and that would make a huge difference to the water table and the development of good roots on your young clematis.

  • Ah ok - didn't realise that. I've given it a good long 10L drink so fingers crossed! Thanks again. :)
