Plum trees stripped

i have three year old Victoria plum and green gage trees beside each other. Whilst away in July all unripe fruit was stripped from both trees. We have squirrels and foxes in the garden. Which do you think did it and how to prevent it next year?

My money is on the squirrels ... I really don't know how you can prevent it short of mounting guard 24/7 ... hopefully some others will have an idea or two ...
