Mulberry Tree

We planted a mulberry tree about 12 years ago and it produced fruit for the first time last year. Sadly we didn't get to eat any because the flies and yellow jackets got to them first!
There is fruit on the tree again this year but I have noticed several mulberries on the ground around the tree. Do they drop some of the fruit, like apples? We have had lots of problems with blackbirds eating our apples, raspberries and blueberries so wondered if this was the cause. No sign of flies or yellow jackets though! The fruit is still very hard and red.
Another question ... when should the fruit be ready to harvest? I read somewhere last year that they can be poisonous if eaten when not properly ripe.
I have added some photos.

Possibly a bird pulling off the berries and dropping them, especially if they aren’t ripe yet.  Ours around here are ripe at the moment, so I assume your will be along soon.  Enjoy, they are lovely.  They also turn in to massive trees.. I hope you have the space?  😄
