Relocating Lavender to a new position?

I’m looking for some advice, we have 6 lavender plants which we planted 12 years ago, bordering the patio which is about to be taken up, how easy and probability of successfully transporting the plants to a new location in the garden? And how should I help them resettle in the new position eh compost etc? (The plants are about 2ft tall and base is 1-2cm wide)

  • You've done well to keep them going for that long. I'd take cuttings and start some new plants as transplanting fully grown specimens in the middle of the summer would be so much trouble and can't imagine they'd look particularly good. If you want to try, it's over to you, they're not exactly difficult to find or expensive to replace.

Since you have to take them up anyways, maybe cut them back and put them individually in fair sized pots in a part shade location for the summer?  Give them some good TLC and then plant them out this fall?  Cuttings are a great idea, so use the pruning for those.  I'm doubtful transplanting will work, and I would guess your plants are likely at the end of their natural lives anyways due to their age.. so only make the effort if you are very attached to these particular plants.
