A 20+ year old Alko impact shredder here which works great but I do have 2 sets of the reversible blades and keep them sharp using an oil stone.  Works great - there is a technique to using them though and I've found it's best to push softer green stuff through using branches and dried tall stems etc., which also creates the perfect mix on-the-fly, so it is ready to use as a mulch in 3 months.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Is that what I was trying to describe?  An "impact shredder"?  I wouldn't be without mine, it's great but not an Alko - aren't they the RR of shredders?

I just tried mowing the compost material and the grass at the same time, and it worked fairly well.  I still had to pull a few long twiggy bits out of the grass box and go over them again, but I think I'll be sticking to this method in future.  Especially as the two tasks arise at the same season.  Thank you everyone for your advice.

Do you clean your hover mower?   We find when the grass is moist that it builds up a sticky layer of soggy grass and that reduces hover power.

Yes I do.  A satisfying task; sometimes the compacted grass can be peeled off like a skin.
