white smut

Hi, we have a Gaillardia which we know now has white smut, it is a small plant, is it best to dig up and get rid.

    Well just realised the site I looked at was USA, do they call it that and we call it powdery mildew,lots of large white spots on the leaves.but no powdery stuff on them. Apparantly White smut is common on these plants.

    RHS website lists downy mildews can affect them. So maybe that's the American equivalent.
    Having said that no idea of how to advise you.....sorry
