What's happening with my dahlia please

Hi, I've grown this confused dahlia this year from seed. There was another flower head in the middle which started to open but had 4 tight outward turning heads fused together, which I've removed. The stem also looks like it's a few fused together. Any ideas what's gone wrong and is this likely to happen next year?
