Damsons?

MeomyeMeomye Posts: 949
I have discovered what I believe to be a damson tree at the bottom of my garden. It has started to produce fruit. I am assuming damson as opposed to plum because the fruits are small. My questions are, when is the best time to pick/eat? how do i know when they are ripe? Do they taste like plums? Should i be excited? t i a

Damsons are quite sour  unless cooked, and the stone does not separate easily. Damsons will go a deep purple colour when they are ready.  As a raw fruit, nothing beats a just picked from the tree ripe Victoria plum.  If you have  too many plums to eat raw, some damsons added makes a better pie filling in my opinion.

When they’re deep purple and starting to soften. Make fabulous jam, can’t wait until ours are ready to pick. I picked ours on the 11th September last year.
