Winter-flowering clematis

My winter-clowering clematis is developing brown wilted patches, which seem to be in the middle of the tendrils rather than the ends. Could it be caused by drought? We have dry sandy soil.

Yes.  Clematis don't like to be thirsty so you need to start giving it regular drinks of water by the bucket load and poured slowly so it sinks in and down to the roots.   Repeat daily for a week and then every other day.   After a  few such doses, give it a very thick mulch of well-rotted manure around the roots and base as this will help reduce evaporation as well as feed the plant.

Keep it moist till the autumn rains set in and keep up the mulching over the years to improve the soil and remember to water in dry periods.

Thanks Obelixx, that's very helpful :-) We do tend to forget about watering plants that are well established - I hate using metered water and the water butts ran out long ago. At least it got well watered yesterday!

Weigh up the costs of metered water against the cost of replacing dead plants.   I water mine.
