I've run them for years. I use both the collapsing type and the solid type. My raised beds are at a downward slope from the taps.. and each of the three beds has two lengths of 25 feet connected (total 50 feet long). The solid type are more robust and less likely to crack and spring a leak.. the collapsing type are only supposed to last two years as claimed on the packaging. I've used mine for years.. but plenty of gushing leaks. I found that if you just wrap electrical tape tightly around that point it stops the gushing (wrap it while it's spraying.. you'll get wet, but it gives you pressure to wrap against). The collapsing type is easier to store, as I pull up the soaker hoses from two of the beds (but leave it in my perennial bed).. but I've only had one hole in the solid type in the four years I've had it.. easily fixed with wraps of electrical tape. When I replace the others I will go with more solid type ones.
Also, get yourself an automatic watering system for your tap. Mine has three ports, and takes all the effort out of remembering to turn it on and off. I have hoses attached at different lengths (you can cut up a hose and buy male/female parts to get the perfect length.. buy metal ones with hose clamps.. not something to go cheap on). It has a rain delay button, or I just turn off the water source if it's wet for a few days.. so it cycles but nothing goes out. Or you can buy a switch you twist with a timer, so you start it going and it stops after the set amount of time. I have that on a flower bed with a soaker hose. Or set a timer on your phone - otherwise you will forget and discover you've left it on for hours (or overnight!).
I put mine on the soil but under a mulch. You can't twist it too tight.. mine just goes all the way down the bed along the base of plants and uphill up the other side, then down the middle.
