Growing a climbing rose along a brick wall

I have a waist height wall that I would like to grow a climbing rose over - what is the best way to start this off and what supports do I need to put in place before I begin?  I was thinking of Gertrude Jekyll as the variety - anyone have any good suggestions for me?

  • Can you insert vine eyes and then use tensioners to stretch wire between them. If the wall is waist-high perhaps 2-3 lines of wire spaced evenly from about knee height.

Also, don't plant the rose directly next to the wall.. plant it 1-2 feet from the base at a diagonal towards the wall.

Buy some good gloves.  Gertrude Jekyll is very thorny!
