Blueberry Bush is huge!

Hello there,

I have a blueberry Bush which as you can see has grown quite large. It was cut down to basically nothing at the start of the year but since has grown back strong.

It's been planted with ericaceous soil, had an elixer applied and gets watered once or twice a week.

The plant itself is thriving, however has only ever fruited once a couple of years ago, nothing since.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get fruit from it. And is the size normal!! Is about 10ft at least!

I am so sorry but this giant is not Vaccinium....common name Blueberry.
    It is a cuckoo!
It is one of the weedy willows...Salix caprea.
Recommend you remove it asap..root and all.
Suspect the blueberry is under it and died a few years ago.
Probably a gift from the birds.

Even fed and watered well blueberries never grow so fast...but willows do.

I agree and often find goat willow seedlings have germinated in my blueberry pots.  The young leaves are sufficiently similar to not be noticed unless you look carefully.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Blueberries are wonderful shrubs...even when the birds beat us to the berries.
    The autumn colour is glorious.

  • Oh my, that is a revelation! Oh the disappointment! .
It's almost tree like at the base and I did have my suspicions but was hopeful at least. The leaves did fool me to be honest.

Oh well, I'll see what we can do to remove now. Thank you for your knowledgeable insight!.

Sorry ...forgot my manners...Welcome to the forum.

It is a tree...a young tree...that grows very quickly...especially when treated with TLC.

  • Thanks for the welcome! It's certainly been getting inadvertent TLC!.
Is this ever a plant that you would keep around or is it likely to cause damage?

If you live near a river with acres of land by all means keep it.
If you have a normal size garden then remove asap.
You already know it grows 10ft in a few months.
Why on earth would you want to keep it?

There are 100's of fab trees /shrubs that have beautiful flowers or interesting berries or go a glorious colour in the autumn which would suit a small garden.

Salix caprea has nothing to recommend it in an suburban garden.
Root could seek out drains/sewer pipes and block them...see video.
Salix love water which is where you can often find them growing...river banks, lake sides.

    Excellent..well done.
Suggest you now go to local Garden centre and treat yourself to a blueberry bush.
At this time of year it should have berries.

  • Well done.
