Path at the side of house

edited July 2020 in Garden design
There are no plants the side passage is too narrow, we recently moved and find the black plant suppressant membrane covered in moss and was badly laid, it was then covered lightly in a fine gravel.
We removed the gravel took up the black plant suppressant membrane, question is do we replace membrane or leave it off with just gravel on top of hard packed soil. or do we introduce hard paving, just need easy maintenance,  it is a little used side entrance

Depends on how much effort you are prepared to put in. Hard paving is more work, expense unless you have them already. Do you use the path for a wheel barrow, dustbin or lawn mower as it will be easier . More time consuming to lay though. Can be slippy if you get moss.
Gravel quick, easy to lay. I personally find membrane overrated as no weed grows up through it but down and once rooted through the membrane harder to remove and the gravel always seems to shift and expose areas but a heavy duty one is probably much better than  the cheap one I bought.

If you don't get lots of leaves or organic debris blowing in there, I would go for crushed rock gravel over a quality membrane.  Just keep on top any weeds.. but probably won't be any for a number of years if you get down 3-4 inches or more of crushed rock.
If lots of leaves or such collect in there, better with paving that is easier to sweep up.
