Same here @jbridle.blackburn - was looking forward to a lovely display of three different varieties of dahlia in a very large pot. Despite feeding (tomorite) and watering very few buds and rather than a stunning display of flowers complementing each other I am getting only one or two blooms at a time. I'm putting it down to the weird weather we had this year.
Mine aren’t that great either , I’ve put it down to the weather, they’ve been fed rose feed and given water ,it’s the only explanation I can come up with.
I left some of mine in the ground over winter and they have done pretty poorly this year, they got hammered by the slugs which wasn't great after such a slow start because of the cold weather. Since then they haven't really put on much of a display and it's just been the odd flower. The ones I overwintered indoors have done much better and flowered really well earlier one but have since gone off the boil and don't have much to show now.
I think the combination of a very dim summer but with lots of fairly frequent heavy rain has caused lots of leaf growth at the expense of blooms.
It also depends on variety, and whether they've been grown from seed, or are from last year's [or previous years'] tubers etc. I pass a house when I walk which has borders at the front full of gaudy dahlias in full flow. There's another one further along which has clumps of them which are only in bud. After an even colder spring here than normal, we've had a record breaking summer in terms of heat [although still fair bit of rain in between] and dry weather, and it's been business as usual since the end of September with rain, wind and single figure temps.
Sometimes, it's down to more than one factor, and sometimes - there's no explanation at all
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
