Baby cucumbers withering ?

I have a cucumber plant in my polytunnel that has and is giving me nice fruit. However, I have half a dozen baby fruits about 2 inches long that have started to yellow and wither, why ?

  • Hello, I'm nearly 100 percent sure this is very normal, it is happening to all my cucumber plants, most of them will shrivel and die, but some will rapidly grow and become very very delicious, much better than at the shops

I sometimes wonder if there is too many "on the go" for the plants to support, even with a good root system it can only absorb so much water/nutrient. It maybe the plants way of regulating, just supporting the biggest fruit first.

The plants can only support so many fruits growing at once, so any extra which form while the plant is 'loaded' with fruit will drop off while still small.  When you take some mature ones off, then the new ones will start maturing again.  One thing to watch for is any mature fruit 'hiding' in the foliage - if left too long and seeds start forming, the plant will stop flowering so always remove fruit when it is of the size you like and store any excess in the fridge or give them away rather than leaving them on the plant.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
