Pruning patio apple?

Hi all

I have a 'patio' apple tree (Red Delicious) which I've had for a little over a year. It was about 3ft tall when I got it and it's a couple of ft taller now. The idea is of course for it to be a compact tree that produces fruit. The description when purchased was that it was self-fertile.

I don't have very much information at all about whether or not to prune this tree and if I should, how to do it. Its current habit is pretty much a single trunk of about an inch diameter, with very short side shoots all the way up. It did flower this spring time with about two or three flowers but no fruits followed. It generally appears healthy. I'm not too fussed about no fruits at this stage but I'd like to know if I'm setting it up for future years in the right way. My garden is extremely tiny which is why I'm looking at Patio trees.

Does anyone have any experience to share on this type of apple and whether I should be pruning and how? I've not done any feeding of it this year but it is in good compost, so any pointers on that topic too would be great.

cheers
Kat
