Magnolia leaves with brown spots

Hi I bought a small magnolia shrub in March. It’s been in a pot but has now started to have brown spots on some of the leaves. What’s the reason for this and do I need to be concerned?

  • I'd think it's a watering issue. Most magnolias are not really pot plants, they appreciate  being planted in the ground. If you pull it out of the pot does it look rootbound or dry? If you're intending to keep it in a pot, it will need quite a sizeable one to get a few years out of it. Admittedly have no idea how large it is currently based on that photo.

I agree, a watering issue.  I had 2 which I had to keep in temporary pots for a year before the planting area was ready and they both developed similar areas on some leaves.  The good news is that once planted in the ground, the new leaves were all fine when they appeared in the following spring.

Thank you for your advice .. I will watch the watering and see how it goes as I may have been overwatering recently. It’s still a small plant so hopefully it will cope in a pot for now but will look to plant in the garden eventually.
