What is eating my calendula

Something is eating my calendula, I cannot see any insects or animals anywhere but there are loads of little black dots all over the plant. I thought they were seeds at first but I think they might be eggs or animal faeces.

    Caterpillar. Look closely and you will find a little green chap munching away.

    Thank you will go and and have a closer look, he has had an absolute feast. Where do you tend to find them, under the leaves?

    Yes and down the stems AND not until you are fed up and about to give up.
