Cutting above and below stem
I’m a new gardener and learning a lot from your programme - thank you. Last week’s GW (not the one with Don) had a tip for stopping growth above and below. Please can you remind me what was said. Thank you

I'd have said it was fairly advanced stuff based on an understanding of woody stem and trunk structure and how sap flows. Have a look at this - https://treescharlotte.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/How-A-Tree-Works.pdf
The small nicks shown in the programme were intended to divert or stop the flow of sap in the cambium layer and thus encourage or discourage new buds and stems to grow and change the shape of a tree or shrub.
