Preparing a border

Hello,

This is possibly a silly question but...
I am currently preparing a border that I intend to mainly plant up in autumn as it will involve moving some plants that are currently elsewhere in the garden. I've dug down a foot and broken up the soil which was extremely compacted. I was also going to dig in lots of compost. My question is, if I dig it in now will the goodness have leached away by the time I come to plant it up. Ideally I'd like to get it done now as I have the bags of compost and it's be good to get them out of the way.

I'd dig it in now, if you've time and inclination. The weather is better IMHO for digging now than Autumn

I'd agree. Get it all set up now, and the compost will help the structure of the ground if it's compacted. If you can get well rotted manure, that will also be really beneficial.

Your border will then have time to settle [the level always drops a bit due to weather ] and you can then plant whenever time and conditions allow.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
