@B_leaf my acers are watered when the reservoir is just about empty! They do need regular watering when they have leaves, just enough to keep the soil moist. If yours are still in their small pots, they will need watering daily, perhaps twice a day if it is hot, more often than mine. They lose a lot of water in warm and/or windy weather. They prefer shady conditions - obviously the drier their position, the more water they need, and wind spoils the leaves of ones with more 'solid' leaves. I can't quite understand the comments about just moving them up a size when potting on. Mine seem to have done brilliantly and moved from shop pot to the ones they are in now. I always think that had I planted them in the ground, their home would be much bigger than any pot! If I had a bigger garden I would plant them in the ground and have many more! By the way, they do need good drainage but I'd be inclined to put your small pots on a saucer containing some pebbles and water especially if it is hot, to give them a bit of humidity. I hope this helps. Joy
