onion drying

I managed to grow 12 good sized red onions (14 had bolted) I lifted them a week ago and laid them to dry in the conservatory. I just inspected them and they are all mushy. What happened? I've never grown onions before.

Had the tops turned over and gone yellow before you lifted them? Are they mushy at the bottom or all over.

Tips were just sorting to turn yellow but the bulbs werea good 20 cm across. Mushy on the side of the bulbs now, some just in one patch, others all over.

I wait until all the tops are yellow and turned over. Then you loosen the roots and leave a few days, then lift them. They sound like they had not ripened off enough.   I don't expect to be lifting onions for at least four weeks yet.
