Laying turf in heavy dark clay soil

Hi, I'm new to gardening. I being reading very mix reviews about mixing or not mixing the top soil into the dark clay soil before laying the new turf.
We bought enough to make around 6 inches of top soil.
Should we mix it?

Thanks

Do you have any sort of drainage issues?  Does water sit in puddles for some while after rainfall?

If it's a slight slope and no drainage issues, I would be tempted to just put the top soil on and then the sod.  Six inches is plenty for the grass.. as long as the water has somewhere to go.  Consider if you need French drains or a soakaway prior to adding the topsoil.

  • We bought the place last years and we are finally finishing levelling the garden. Was actually done in a slope to the house! We are mixing the floor up, (had a layer of clay and then layer of red sand and then clay again) and trying to break the big pieces. We already done the half of it, and found no water puddle and the land feel just normal soft muddy after rain.
  • Before the top soil gets delivered we are doing it in a slightly slope away from the house. Plus we thought about planting plants that like to absorve a lot of water.
