Browning runner bean leaves

Hi,

I have some runner beans planted directly into the ground. I grew them from seed, prepared the soil with manure and fish blood and bone. I have been feeding them with super phosphate. Some leaves have started wilting, going brown or crisping up and dying. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I used the bug spray around 10 days ago as I had black flies. Could this have caused it?

It might have done some damage if the spray was used on a sunny day. I find squirting them off with a jet from a hosepipe usually sorts the blackfly out, but I’m aware they have been a particularly bothersome in some places this year.

I notice that the soil looks rather dry .... I’d give them a thorough watering ... maybe leave a hosepipe trickling at the roots for half an hour for the next few evenings. That’ll perk them up 😊

Some fertiliser is fine, but not too often.

Thank you so much for your advice, much appreciated. I'll leave the hose on them this evening. Do you spray your beans with a fine mist late evening or early morning? My dad has always told me they love that but I'm not so sure.

I do that if we have a hot dry spell as it’s supposed to help the beans set.
Although this year I’m growing the variety ‘Moonlight’ which are a cross between runners and French beans and are self fertile so not dependent on being pollinated to get beans. We ate the first ones of the year tonight for supper ... delicious 😋
