thanks everyone for your advice, as I have the plants I’m going to give them a go, if they do outgrow the large containers within the planters I can move them on, not really done once and for all but may last couple of years at least. They all say height of 1 metre but like you say fairygirl they may soon get too big. I have tried clematis there several times, the small flower types like velours and polish spirit but the seemed to look very sickly and straggly, So moved them and now doing fine, also had Jacobs ladder year before last, it looked lovely that year but never came back, it could be my drainage affecting things and need better soil, definitely going to look at that at the weekend. thanks again everyone for all your good advice certainly given me something to think about and keep me busy.

The key with clematis is to pick suitable ones, not just buy one and hope it suits. Check out the specialist sites - Taylor's Clematis, Thorncroft and Hawthornes where you can put in the requirements. There are hundreds of varieties that are happy in shade and plenty which don't need a lot of pruning :)
Once you have other planting in there, it then affects the amount of water/nutrients available too, but you need adequate drainage for all plants. Shrubs in particular take up a lot of moisture once mature.
The soil needs refreshing every year too or it becomes stale. That's very important in a container of any kind.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
