Wasp/bee eating my tree!

I have a standard photinia (red robin) tree & wasps or bees, not sure what they are, are chewing the trunk & have made a hole right through it. If they continue the tree will die or break. What can I do to stop them? Any suggestions please.

    Your tree likely has a beetle larva eating away inside the trunk.  The wasps are merely eating the sugary sap which is being released by the tree because of the damage caused by the grub.  The small chips of wood at the base of the tree are a diagnostic that wood boring beetle larvae are present.  Some info here:
