Penstomen Advice

Feel a bit thick for asking this but can anyone tell me the correct way to deadhead penstemons? I am not sure whether to cut the whole stem down to the ground or just cut below the spent flower heads, maybe at the nearest pair of leaves.  Many thanks in advance.

    I've done both.. cut just below the flowers.. as well as cutting down to three to four sets of leaves remaining on each stem.. always hoping for a second flush.  Plant does fine either way, but I never get a second flush (even when cutting back early before most flowers had completely finished).  Don't cut them back to the ground.
