Buxus and salix flamingo

I Am about to plant a number of salix flamingo trees and buxus. I am unsure what to plant with them to add year round interest - friends have suggested lavender, thyme and rosemary. Another has said alpine flowers... any suggestions please? Thanks

I’ve got a salix flamingo, I underplanted with strawberries and poppies this year and now a pumpkin is growing there but I  think lavender would be prettier. Actually I also have a fuchsia growing happily there.

Bearing in mind the amount of water you'll need for the salix, you'll need to look at plants which will also be fine with moister soil, and some shade.
Hardy geraniums for example will cope with anything. Certainly not alpines.
I doubt lavender, thyme etc would be happy either. Different type of plant altogether, and all like free draining soil and sun.

It depends on how you're using them all too. If the box plants are being used in  a traditional way - ie for a parterre type of design, you can plant anything inside them.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
