Hornbeam close to house???

Please help. We would like to take these hornbeams out of their containers and plant them in the ground but this wall adjoins our house wall. Do you think this is will be too close? The tree on the left is 3 ft from house wall?
We were wanting to plant them because, as you can probably see they are too high in the containers and don’t screen the top of the wall.

 Thank you in advance.

It's a bit close but you will be maintaining them more as a hedge on stilts than as a tree, right? What is your soil like - clay soil tends to cause more problems as it shrinks and expands more due to tree roots. Would it affect a neighbour's property or just your own?

  • Thanks Loxley, that’s exactly right; they will be used as hedging and it’s just our house it will be near. From my excavations so far the soil in our garden does appear to be quite clay like.

It's very difficult to comment further, because trees next to buildings can be a serious issue. I think I would try and create a sort of below ground 'planter' which will keep the roots relatively confined, bearing in mind that the main issue is the soil shrinking when the trees are taking up water, and expanding again during winter as the soil becomes wet again.

  • That’s a great idea having a sunken planter. Thank you.
