purple hazel

I took young plants, three years ago, from base of Hazel. They are healthy plants, but they are green ! Does anyone know if this is normal, will they eventually turn purple ?

    I think purple hazel is grafted ... your plants probably came from below the graft.

    Thank you, I was not aware of that, nevertheless got three nice plants, will plant them in hedgerow.

    Further to my post on Purple Hazel 
    It is now a very large shrub, how hard back can I cut it and when - Thanks

    Hazel can be coppiced, so you can cut back as hard as you like, as long as you don't cut it below the graft point.  It depends on what you want to achieve.
    If you just want to keep it to roughly the same size each year, see how much it has grown this year and prune it back by a similar amount when it is dormant.  Always remove any dead, diseased or damaged stems first.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    I have purple Hazel which came from seedlings which I found in friends garden when they were about15cm tall. I assume they had grown from nuts fallen from her tree/buried by squirrels. Mine is now about 3m tall and I'm planning on taking some of the larger stems out during dormancy to reduce it a bit.
    I love the red colour to the nuts before they ripen.
