Roses from seed

Hi all, has anyone had any experience of growing roses from seed?  Looking for some advice on best way to approach this.

I've grown species roses from seed.  They need cold stratification to break their dormancy.  Last autumn I scraped the seeds out of a ripe, squishy Rosa rugosa hip and mixed them with very gritty compost topped with a layer of grit, and left it outside all winter, though you can give the pot several weeks in the fridge if you live somewhere where frosts are not common.  They germinated in spring, and are destined to make a rose hedge in due course - it's a cheap way of producing a lot of plants.

If you sow the seeds of hybrid, named roses they won't be the same as the parent plant, but you might get a nice surprise... it is of course possible to make an intentional cross between two roses, but someone else will need to give you advice on that because I've never tried.   :)

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

I get some self-seeded rosa glauca from time to time. They take a good few years to get to any reasonable size
    In London. Keen but lazy.
