Composting issue

Hi again

I've literally just found out that it's possible for a composter to spontaneously combust, so concerned about the fact that I've mine near an oil tank.

Considering relocating it but will have to wait until autumn, as the only other appropriate place is where my california blue blossom is planted, and I can't relocate that until summer passes, thereby delaying composting process.

Was so excited about starting it but then thought eeeeek.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts 🙂

Thanks Caz

Theoretically  maybe. I've never known it. So long as it is damp, it's not going to burn.

What is the source of your information? I’ve never, ever heard of this happening.

I manage several efficient compost bins that I’m regularly unable to stick my hand in because it’s just too hot. There is often steam (not smoke!) rising from the centre.

However, I would say it’s still about 10 stages away from bursting into flames. Apart from anything else the material is kept moist and it’s probably only the top 12” that gets really hot and the 2-3’ below that is in the cooler maturing stage so it’s all diluted.

It shouldn’t worry you but, if it does, just move the bin when you can.

You could just put a sheet of galvanized metal between the two.. paint it green to help it blend in.  Alternatively.. just a tall stack of cement blocks.. if you don't have kids around to knock them over.

As others have said.. nearly impossible for it to ever combust.  But probably best to do something about it if it worries you.  I don't let my kids have a bath when there is lightening outside.. in case the house gets struck and it travels through the pipes into the tub.  Nearly impossible.. extremely unlikely.. but I feel better not doing it.

Best laugh I’ve had in months...

Haha.. glad to hear. I'm not crazy though.. According to the CDC: “14. Is it safe to take a shower or bath during a lightning storm? No. Lightning can travel through plumbing. It is best to avoid all water during a lightning storm. Do not shower, bathe, wash dishes, or wash your hands.” https://www.cdc.gov/disasters/lightning/faq.html

Oooh a reason not to do the washing up 😎

  • Hi all

Thanks so much for all your help and laughs 😄

I think for peace of mind I will hold off until later in year when I can relocate the blue blossom and shift the compost bin. I'm new to it and would worry if I forget to add water, turn etc.

In the meantime I'll throw my leftovers into buckets.... Let them gather up for layering.

    Thanks

    Hi

I have heard about this being a possibility but on our composting scale, it is a very very small possibility  - probably impossible. It is more likely on the industrial sized composting. Again though, the chances of it happening is very very small.

Your compost bin is very similar to mine. It does heat up when I add things like grass clippings but not hot enough to combust. It is more a heat that you can feel when you put your hand over it.

On the lightening does and donts. When I was a kid, I was told that the TV had to go off incase the TV arial got struck and it broke the TV 🤣🤣

I have my bins operating on a hot composting system, lots and lots of gear heating as hot as possible and attaining temps up to 90°c but the high temps drop after a couple of days and I need to turn it again. Id love to be able to heat them enough to even get a slight smoulder 🤣🤣
