Wisteria in need of help

Hi All! My wisteria i bought from nursery andplanted in the spring 2019 is looking unwell. It has grown leaves but no flowers and has not grown not as much as I would have thought. (being told its a vigorous plant?) And now unfortunately i'm seeing signs of unhealth, which i assume also has something to do with its stunted growth. I don't have a picture of it size for when I planted it but it had started growing up its trelis. Can anyone help me with this. What am I doing wrong? (or am i being unpatient?). Thank you :)

Hello Frederik, Welcome to the forum.
Your wisteria needs feeding and pruning. Pruning is done twice a year, summer pruning in July taking off all those long whippy shoots back to 7 leaves. Then in January you prune those further back to two leaves. Those joints should then produce your flowers.
Pruning is very important if you want your wisteria to flower. I wouldn't have expected such a young plant to flower this year, it must concentrate all it's energies into making strong roots.

I would give a feed of granular slow release fertiliser pellets in the correct dose around the base of the plant and watered in. The old leaves that are dying off don't matter.

One further point. Your trellis is nowhere big enough for a plant of this vigour, which can cover the whole of a two storey house if not kept in check. You will need to fix either further trellis to at least 2 or 3 fence panels or preferably fix horizontal heavy duty wire strands about 2 ft apart all along. The wisteria is then trained horizontally along the wires.
    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks so much lizzie!
I'll get on the pruning tomorrow! I actually do fertilize quite often with the liquid from my compost bin. Also have put down some granular slow release fertilizer in the soil about a month ago. Should I put some more down?

Regarding the trellis that's really good to know. I thought the orange trellis was gonna be enough until it was tall enough to start growing horizontally?

    Thanks alot for replying :)
