Blackfly problems

  • Yes, no problem as aphid eggs won't survive composting.  They survive the winter by laying eggs in the cracks of bark on woody shrubs and trees, or colonies survive on plants growing somewhere protected from the frost, such as in greenhouses or on houseplants.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thank you BobTheGardener. This might explain why the runner beans have been so badly affected. This year they have been round the side of the house which is south facing wall with a pear tree and a fig tree growing against it. So possibly the aphids hid in the trees which didn't suffer from frosts. (We had few of those anyway)
