Success at last with coriander

CloggieCloggie Posts: 1,457
I've been trying to grow coriander but it goes to seed as soon as I turn my back and put the kettle on!

I've tried from seed, from seedlings given to me and also growing on from supermarket pots.  I've tried shade, partial and sunny but I've finally had success with some sprouting from last year's attempt that I gave up on and let go over. Hurrah.  I see this years attempts are also going to seed so hopefully next year ill have locally hardy sprouts in both locations.

Are you using seed from a seed merchant, or the kind you buy for cooking?  I think you'll find they are different varieties: the former bred for lots of foliage, the latter to flower and set seed asap.  I've tried both, several times, and rarely succeeded.  I suspect mine never get enough heat.

I have been using seeds bought for cooking, bagged in India.  They are the ones that self seeded last year outside, they are an annual.  This years were given so dont know the source. I'm going to let the ones that sprouted go to seed again this year and cross my fingers for more next year.
  • I use a variety called Calpyso which keep going for ages without running to seed. Before I discovered them I never had any success at all.

I've done 4 showings of calypso this year. Every single one bolted early. I'm convinced there's no such thing as bolt resistant coriander, you just have to be lucky with conditions as something always sends them over when outdoors. My best crop is on a window ledge in a conservatory, full shade but lots of indirect light.

My conservatory is akin to an oven\freezer!! 😬 the person who gave me the seedlings said hers have gone to seed too.  My self-seeds from last year still haven't gone over but this year's are pathetic! 😁
