The birds certainly eat mine, but that's partially why I planted it. Plus it's a tree the height of my upstairs windows (it's Amelianchier lamarkii not canadensis) so not going to be picking anything up there.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

Same here @JennyJ ... we got ours as an ornamental which is great for wildlife.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

I might be wrong, but I think "they" have decided that canadensis and lamarkii are basically the same plant.

    RHS says they're the same.

Could be. In which case no container is ever going to be big enough 'cos at about 25 years old mine is well and truly a tree.

One wonders why some folk ask questions if they presume to already know the answers

If you are refering to me, I didn know any answer when I posted and still not sure  but the replies pointed me in a direction worth looking and I may or may not have found the answer, which I then posted for comment.

Without the combined help of  Dovefromabove,Jenny, K67 and others I would not have followed the google trail that led me there. So thanks to everyone for their help
