Hole in lawn

A large hole appeared in our lawn when my sons's foot went through it.  It looks like a tunnel.  What could cause it

Hi @mcrafer  😊 welcome to the forum

Thats probably due to moles or voles. Both tunnel just below the surface of the soil.

Thank you. It looks quite deep though. At least 15inches.  I didn't think the hole would be that deep if it was  a mole or vole.  I'll get it checked out.

Moles do sometimes go down deep after worms. But there are other causes of holes underground ... subsidence, damaged drains etc ... on the farm where I grew up a combine harvester fell halfway into a hole in a field in the middle of nowhere ... a geologist said it was a ‘geological anomaly’ probably thousands of years old  ...

    Best check it out ...

I have 2 raised beds and during the recent hot and dry spell 12 inch deep cracks / holes appeared.
