Mr Lincoln rose dieback

This rose has become very leggy only new growth at the top and today found a main stem cracked open, I have removed this. The other stems are very woody but new growth right at the top with a few flower buds appearing. Can I save the plant?

    Can you tell us how old is the plant and maybe add a couple of images to give us all an idea of its current state? It sounds like either a very old specimen or one that has not been pruned appropriately for a while.
