Overgrown climbing hydrangea

A very old (40 plus years) climbing hydrangea has had to be pulled away from wall for repairs. If I cut back very hard into old wood will it regrow? Or is it time to say goodbye?

  • A tricky one...my feeling would be that it will regrow but can't imagine it would be that vigorous. Probably a great opportunity for a fresh start?

Let's bump it up and see if anyone with experience in mature specimens can offer more advice.

    Any pictures?

I might agree with amancalledgeorge (george?). You might be able to determine some of the many support points, landmark them, and built a large frame, you could get lucky, but it's a lot of work. The question becomes about time and money. Is it worth it?

If the plant is unharmed I would think it would reattach, if it has support.
  • Thanks for your comments, I agree it might work to reattach but will not look good for some years.
