How to kill weeds and improve lawn

Hi Folks I have 2 lawns that are more weed than grass.I have a tool to remove the thistles on the front lawn but it has clover and all sort sof other weeds.
I did buy a product called westland lawn sand that contains iron sulphate but haven't used it yet it is supposed to kill moss before I scarify with a rake,but I have read that iron sulphate doesn't do much to kill weeds.
Can anyone tell what I should do to kill the lawn weeds please?
