Newly planted Jasmine. Now what?

Hello folks,

Beginner gardener here. Just replanted this star Jasmine as it started to look a bit sad in the pots they were previously in. When I first bought it a month ago it had loads of flowers and smelled incredible...now it's mainly leaves and the smell has gone.

Does anyone have any tips on pruning, watering etc to bring it back to life a bit again? It's in shade until about 1pm then gets sun until sunset.

Thanks!

Hi there. I  too have jasmine planted last year, which looks like yours. My plan is to encourage it to grow in stature having seen huge seemingly overgrown specimens in garden centres! I haven't done any pruning yet. When mine gets above the trellis I tie them in horizontally under the impression that horizontal growth is better than vertical aka roses. Looking at your picture I might even consider retying it in to get more horizontal growth. I'll be watching your post to see what other people have to say. I want as much flower as possible - last year I could smell it in the living room which is far from where it is growing.  One thing I have learned is that it doesn't do as well when it is shaded by lots of shrubs!
  • My only observation is that one plant would have been enough to cover that trellis. They do become quite large when happy. I've only grown true jasmine/Jasminum officinale ...which in its second year is looking so much better after allowing a lot of the structure to mature over the winter. So can imagine yours will be much more robust next year. It will be adjusting to the new location for the rest of the season and will be ready to go next spring. Just hope it's reliably hardy in your location.

  • Thank you both for your comments. I have retied to encourage horizontal growth and will look at attaching a trellis either side then to allow them to grow out. Maybe patience is the key here! Will keep the thread updated 😊
  • I have three different jasmines. A bit of a fan.A deciduous one I cut back each year as it is prolific. My yellow leaved one I have cut back when transplanting and it has flourished since. My newest jasmine has been in two years and this year has been beautiful. So patience is needed. Also they do not flower continuously during the summer.
