I also laid Indian Sandstone myself. I also had plenty of mortar stains on the stone.
I was disappointed for a few days, until I realized that I've never gone into someone's garden and inspected the patio and if the Indian sandstone is the most interesting thing in my garden - I'd have miserably failed as a gardener haha
Any pointing in a a patio, including any surrounding mortar on a path or patio, should be a 3-1 mix of 3 sand to one cement. This needs to be gauged by using a margerine container, or anything really, filled to the top and levelled off, for the 3 sand and the cement. That way you will guarantee a proper mix. also apply the ratios to nay concrete in the ground as well, and if laying a large area use reinforcing mesh as well. Also when pointing, have a bucket of water and sponge to hand and wipe down the slab edges to remove any excess mortar, this includes the slab face if you have dropped some. most builders and landscapers feel frightened to do this. I don`t know why, maybe they think its not what a real professional would do.
