Carrots in freshly manured soil

The advice is often repeated - do this and the carrots will fork. I applied liberal doses of well rotted manure to the carrot bed late this winter and have just harvested these

Maybe Rutland carrots are rough and tough.

    I grow carrots in really stony soil and get lovely straight roots.. What does seem to make them fork and generally grow crooked is over crowding.
