Rampant clematis. Can I tame it before next year?

    There's a limit to how many they'd produce once a plant is mature.
    I'd guess that if you cut some stems right back to the ankles, there's less chance of those growing. 
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    Well I cut iit back to the ankles 2 or 3 weeks ago and now  it's  coming back with a vengeance.  I'm  going to have to take out some of the root.
    Now or later?
    Can I dig a bit out round d the edges or do I  have to dig it out and split it

    Above before it got really rampant. 
    Theres two varieties  there. The purple one was caught in the crossfire but it recovering  well 
    In London. Keen but lazy.
