Patio dilemma

I want to lay a patio or decking without killing my leylandii hedge.  How do I achieve this without damaging the leylandii roots that cover parts of the where I want to put the patio or decking?

Please post photo, I would think decking would be preferable

I would think you will only be scratching the surface of any roots of a beast like a leylandii.  I might be wrong?  I put a summer house in the lea of a twisted willow and chopped through some fairly big roots to do so but the tree didn't care.
