Hazel. Shall I plant something else instead?

B3B3 Posts: 27,505
The squirrels have had the nuts before they've even turned green. Not unexpected.
Is the hazel of benefit to anything much apart from squirrels ( whom I don't particularly wish to benefit)?
Ive pruned it right down to shortish sticks so now would be a good time to think about hoiking it out.
Would something else be better in  dappled shade clay?
I'm happy to water it until it becomes established, but afterwards it will get pretty dry.
I don't mind keeping it if it's worth the space.

Well, if the squirrels are busy eating hazelnuts, they're not stealing the bird feed!

If you're interested in wildlife (other than squirrels) you can't beat a hawthorn.

If you coppiced it every 2 or 3 years you'd have a regular supply of stakes/ beanpoles etc :)

Oops Ive chopped them into brown bin friendly size and the thick ones are on the log pile.
    I like the hawthorn idea.

I'm sure it will be many years before you need transplanting @Songbird-1😊

  • What did you decide to do in the end? If you chopped it down you won't have any nuts this year. But just out of interest.

I had the same problem. They decimated my tree in one weekend while my back was turned.

But I found a way around. Just harvest them as the squirrels start to come.

This is such an easy harvest that it's a shame to lose the tree if you've still got it.

Although they do grow fast and need keeping on top of, unless you've got a large space.
