There are filters in the two "main" ones coming from our bungalow and conservatory, mainly to stop debris

Just be aware that open water butts can be a magnet to adventurous small boys ... I know someone who would not be alive had a builder not seen him tip himself headfirst into a water butt at a neighbouring house, leapt  over the fence, grabbed hold of his ankles and hauled him out!

He was ‘old enough to know better’ but was trying to reach the water to fill his water pistol ... 😰

I cant even twist the blooming lids on our latest ones to see how full they are, they are so blooming tight!

Tap the side of the butt ... you’ll soon learn to differentiate  the sound of a full butt from the sound of a half full or nearly empty one.

The butts in OH's cottage in Norfolk have lids and the water stays clean. The butts in my garden in France don't have lids and they get filled with sludge from falling leaves and occasionally dead mice.

My water butt collects water from my shed guttering then when full it runs to behind my conifers as they'll have no problem drinking it up. My question is
The water in the butt stinks like it is stagnant and when I turn the tap on to fill the watering can I have to back away due to the smell from the water. Is it ok to use this water on my plants or should I empty this and start again?

    Hi @steveharris3

I've had that problem in the past and emptied the butt out and started again ... but if it happens again I'm going to try this https://www.envii.co.uk/shop/water-butt-klear/
I have nothing to do with the company, but it's got to be worth trying rather than tipping a butt full of water away.
