Dahlia problem - aphids?

Hi. I probably know the answer to this already but hoping someone out there can confirm. As well as snails, I've got the problem in the photos below. About half my dahlias are affected, the others are fine - so far! I reckon its aphids BUT whats confusing me a bit is that I never see the beasts themselves unlike on the roses where they're pretty obvious. Thank you in advance...

If you are not seeing any aphids, I doubt it's aphids.

Thanks @Fire. After a bit of digging online, I think it may be some kind of virus - aargh! Probably spread by aphids though. I've got about four quite badly affected - looks like they'll have to go. Seems such a waste! I've been trying to find out if it can spread to other species of plant but still not sure...
