AGAPANTHUS FLOWERING

HAVING CHANGEING POTS AFTER DAMAGE BUT MAINTAINING THE CLOSE COMPACT OF THE AGAPANTHUS-AND EXPECTEDNO FLOWERS THIS YEAR-BUT HAPPY TO SEE NO LESS THAN 5 FLOWERS STEMS WITH THREE SLOWLY OPENING UP AS WHITE-BUT WAS ASTOUNDED THAT ON TWO FLOWER STEMS-SOME DISTANCE BELOW THE MAIN FLOWERS IS A SECONDARY BLOOM BURSTING THROUGH THE STEMS ABOUT 6 INCHES BELOW-HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCED THIS BEFORE?-SEE ATTACHMENTS HOPE THEY ARE SHOWN CLEARLY TO VIEW-WEBB D

    The opinion of the RHS is that the bent stems and the bursting of the stems at the kinks is attributable to this year’s bizarre weather - very, very wet, then warm and exceptionally dry, then cool and windy. I have only had this happen on a tall evergreen agapanthus not on the two medium sized deciduous ones. Incidentally, these photos were taken over a week ago and since then the stems are less twisted and the bursting buds have not developed any more.

    HELLO-BEN-IF I MAY CALL YOU-PHEW I THOUGHT WE HAD THE UNIQUE EVENT-NEVERE MIND STILL FEEL BETTER IN FINDING OUT THE REASON FOR THE PROBLEM-I HA D A THOUGHTTHAT IS WAS BECAUSE OF THE INCLEMENT WEATHER WE HAD HERE IN THE WIRRAL-AS WE ARE ONLY 3 MILES FROM THE IRISH SEA-EXCELLENT PHOTOS BY THE WAY-REGARDS DAVE WEBB

    My 4 year old Agapanthus seems to be having a similar Issue. Surely must be down to the extreme weather changes. One of the flower stems has an off shoot. A little dwarf bud that is blooming albeit deformed. A second batch of new deformed buds are also growing which is very bizarreFresh mini shoot. Not coming up in usual bud form but already opened. Strange!

    Estoy en Argentina y me ocurre lo mismo. Hace 3 años aproximadamente que noté esto en algunos de mis agapantus. Buscando información veo que no son solo los míos y que en otras partes del mundo también sucede.

    Ooh, I thought I'd forgotten all my Spanish but I think I understand! I've occasionally had twisty agapanthus flower stems and wonky buds.
    Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

    Hello from Australia - I have the same problem with really quite twisted stems on agapanthus and , like you, I think it’s due to the really wet season(s) we’ve had.  We live on the western slopes of the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, and are actually in a rain shadow area but the last two years have been incredibly wet.

    We also get a late, second, stunted set of flower shoots.  Only one or two per plant, and the buds never fully open. This year we got them in October.  Very bizarre, but becoming the norm now. 

    At least none of you seem to have Agapanthus Gall Midge.  We got rid of most of our plants a few years ago due to this.  Only one hybrid was resistant for us.
